27. Victoria - Nanaimo
Suicidal Trans-Canada Highway
After spending a nice day in Victoria and being part of a birthday-party in the evening (at which I did not really know anyone), I started pretty late today. But at least I was well prepared: Gary, my host for the past two nights gave me many good hints for my further journey. (Thanks again for the very nice two nights that you hosted me in your house!)
On the so called rotary-route I cycled northwards again. This also meant that I had to do my first meters on the Trans-Canada Highway, a road that I heard many stories of in the past few weeks. People were talking about a suicidal road (at least for cyclists) but as so often it was not even close to as bad as this: The shoulders were as wide as a full lane and I cycled relaxed on this pretty busy road. It was still a surprise when I met an older woman in an electric wheelchair - on the 4-lanes highway!
The route itself was not as glorious as people told me. In fact it was a lot of hills and many additional km to get away from the big road. However, I made my way up to Nanaimo pretty fast and arrived at a very nice place a few km outside of Nanaimo.
My new hosts are a retired couple again who are taking care of me very nicely. They let me have part of their very impressive dinner and I have to admit I am getting used to very high standards here on this Island ;-)
